Compact checklists for iPhone

The basics

• New list — the ＋ button, bottom right of the Lists screen.
• New item — ＋ inside a list, or tap the empty space below the last row. Tapping that space again closes the field.
• Check it off — tap the circle. Checked items go grey and stay put.
• Edit an item — tap its text.
• Reorder items — hold a row, then move it. The brief hold is what keeps the list scrollable. (On the Lists screen it is Edit, top left, and the drag handles.)
• Delete — swipe a row left, then tap Delete. Swiping right does not reveal it: inside a list that direction takes you back to Lists, and on an open row it puts the actions away.
• Paste a list — tap ＋ and paste. Every line becomes its own item, and a leading bullet, number or tick box is removed: - milk, 1. milk and [ ] milk all arrive as milk. A marker is only taken when a space separates it from the words, so 3-4 apples, 2% milk and 1.5 kg flour are left exactly as they are.
• Hide what's checked — the eye button, bottom left.

Every destructive action offers Undo in the message that appears at the bottom, for a few seconds. That includes deleting a whole list, deleting everything that is checked, clearing all the checks, and deleting an item by clearing its text. Once the message goes, so does the undo — there is no trash and no history.

Making it fit your eyes

The Aa button in the top right opens Text size & spacing. Four text sizes, four row spacings, and a switch for lines between rows — on by default — with a live sample so you can see what you are choosing.

The two screens keep separate settings. Open it from the Lists screen and you are changing the Lists screen; open it inside a list and you are changing the rows in every list. The sheet says which one you are editing.

The text size here sits on top of your iPhone's own setting, so Settings › Accessibility › Larger Text still works as usual.

Voice

Press and hold the microphone, speak, then let go. What you say appears above the button as you talk. Slide up while holding to throw the recording away without doing anything.

Zetlist listens in English until you say otherwise. To add a language, open ⋯ → Voice languages inside a list. The picker offers every language your iPhone can transcribe, and marks which of them understand spoken commands as opposed to plain dictation. Reorder them, remove the ones you don't use, remove English if you never speak it — the list just can't be emptied completely.

Once you have more than one, a small chip appears above the microphone showing which language is live; tap it to cycle through your list. Recognition accuracy depends on that being right — speaking Korean with the chip on EN produces nonsense.

Thirteen languages understand commands: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Catalan, Dutch, Swedish, Polish, Russian, Turkish and Korean. Every other language is still useful — what you say comes back as an offer, and one tap adds it.

Each one follows its own grammar rather than a translation of the English. Turkish will find a row you wrote as süt when you say sütü, and Swedish will find mjölk when you say mjölken.

If the microphone doesn't work

• Permission. Settings › Zetlist › Microphone and Speech Recognition both need to be on. Zetlist asks once; if you said no, this is where to change it.
• A language says it is unavailable. If that language's dictation has never been used on the phone, iOS may not have the language pack. Add it under Settings › General › Keyboard › Dictation Languages.
• Nothing was recognised. The transcript comes back as an offer — Heard "milk" — no command in it. [Add] — rather than acting on it, so a misheard phrase can never silently delete something. Tap Add if that is what you meant.

Copying a list out

Inside a list, ⋯ → Copy items puts the rows on the clipboard as plain text, one per line — no bullets, no check marks, no list name. Paste it into a note, a message, or anywhere else.

It copies what is on screen. If you are hiding checked items, it copies only the unchecked ones, and the menu says Copy unchecked items so you know before you tap.

Sharing a list

Long-press a list on the Lists screen, or use ⋯ → Share… from inside it. The whole list travels inside the link itself — there is no server, nothing is uploaded, and the link keeps working for as long as it exists.

It is a copy, not a shared document. Once the other person imports it, the two lists are independent. Zetlist has no live collaboration and is not trying to.

Nothing happened when they tapped it? If they already have Zetlist, ask them to copy the link, then in Zetlist tap ⋯ → Paste shared list. That path also rescues a link a messaging app has mangled.

"Can't share — too long." The link would be long enough that messaging apps start truncating it, and the recipient gets an unreadable one. That is around 450 short items — fewer if the item names are wordy, since the real limit is the length of the encoded link rather than the count. Split the list.

If the list is hiding checked items, the checked ones are not in the link. Sharing the filter and then also sending everything it hides would be incoherent. Turn the filter off first if you want the whole thing.

Things Zetlist deliberately does not do

No due dates, no reminders, no priorities, no subtasks, no notes fields, no projects, no collaboration, no sync between devices, and no account. Items cannot be moved between lists, and there is no jump-to-top — reorder by holding a row and dragging it. It is for shopping lists and packing lists — things you write down, tick off, and forget. If you need a task manager, this is the wrong app and there are good ones.

Your data

Everything lives on your iPhone and nowhere else. That also means: deleting the app deletes your lists, and there is no way to get them back. If a list matters, share it to yourself — that link holds the whole list, so it doubles as a backup. Turn off hide checked items first, or the checked ones will not be in it.
